The Alphabet Meditation Practice (AMP) is a way to connect with a God/Creator/Higher Power of our own understanding, as well as a world that we do not. It is highly personal as we practice our own meditation timing and method over a series of 26 days, yet we also have an opportunity to practice collective meditation by way of accountability to Self and others.
Choose a time, daily, to meditate for 20, 17, 7 or 3 minutes.
The length of time is less important than attending to your practice and your Self for a period of time without technology, chores, or responsibilities to others.
Choose a meditation the fits where you are.
More prayer than meditation? Guided meditation? Religious or Spirituality-based?
The method is less important than answering your authentic calling, or realistic ability, to "come away" for a time to meditate.
Before you enter your meditation, think of the next letter of the alphabet as an invitation.
Day 1, the letter is A. Listen for what word comes to your attention that begins with A. Invite this word as an intention, then carry it every-so-lightly into your meditation.
Day 2, invite what word comes with the next letter of the alphabet. Then enter your meditation.
Continue your practice for 26 days using the alphabet as an invitation and marker of where you are in your commitment to "come away."
OPTION: Share in safe communities the letter you used.
A simple post in comments/text/email or a call about the letter you invited helps our accountability to the practice as well as encourages others. It also helps to build a sense of collective meditation.
Additionally, not everyone needs to be on the same letter on the same day. In the AMP process, wherever we are IS collective meditation.
Seriously, answer your authentic desire to meditate in the way that most fits where you are today.
You may want to continue your current practice as it is, or return to an abandoned but familiar method. You may be intrigued to practice a different approach, or experiment with a teaching that you have recently read about/heard. Make it your own.
Remember: thinking of the next letter of the alphabet is not necessarily a theme or centering word for your prayer and meditation. It is primarily a tool to bring your listening-heart to what may come from the suggestion of the letter, and a tool for marking where you are in the 26 days series.
For Example:
I began my Alphabet Meditation Practice today with the letter A. As I settled and entered into my meditation I thought of Attitude. I agreed it was a word that could use my attention. I acknowledged, lovingly, that there was definitely room-for-improvement in my Attitude. Then I began a guided meditation that had nothing to do with the letter A or Attitude.
Yes, from time to time, Attitude came back into my thinking. I noticed it. I thanked it. But I returned to the practice as I was being guided. I continued the personal meditation that I had chosen for the day.
At the conclusion of my meditation, I remembered: Attitude. I set an intention to try to be a Witness to my Attitude today, and to choose an attitude of compassion and kindness.
OPTION: I exercised my option to share with my community, by way of comment on my Facebook page, that I completed my meditation today. I shared only the letter A. Hopefully tomorrow I will enter, complete, and post the letter B as an accountability to myself, others, and most importantly - my own practice
The Alphabet Meditation Practice works well to encourage a short-term, 26 day commitment to consistently meditate - whether shared with others, or not.
The AMP method may be used to support your own practice, singly.
Two or more, or small groups, may use the AMP method to practice together and support gentle accountability with one another.
The AMP method is intended to encourage and support individual callings to prayer and meditation practices rather than promote any one style or method.
